Eleven years in the making, the Kensington Community Food Co-Op is finally open at 2670 Coral Street (near the corner of Frankford Ave. and East Lehigh).
Started by community members determined to bring healthy food options to the neighborhood, it took years of fund raising and member campaigns to launch. I have friends who served on the board, and became a member several years ago.
One week before the official grand opening, I made my first shopping trip. Membership is not required, and anyone can shop.
I had been there several times when it was a cold (literally) and empty space. They did an amazing job.
There is also a bar/cafe with a beer fridge and outdoor seating.
Membership is a one time $200 payment. Local businesses offer discounts to members, and it’s a great way to support a truly grassroots organization.
Cool.
